And Introducing..... James Frain

The oft-supporting Brit finally leaps into the limelight via a plum role alongside Emily Watson

James Frain's curiosity soon gets the better of him. "Where's this going in Empire?" he enquires good-naturedly, and when told the answer says with a grin: "Good, 'cause who gives a s**t if I know how much a pint of milk is?"

In fact, the 30-year-old is far keener to thump the tub about his industrious film career, which began out of drama school with a part in Richard Attenborough's Shadowlands and has been nonstop ever since. Today the emphasis is on his latest role, that of Daniel Barenboim, husband to Emily Watson's Jacqueline Du Pré in Hilary and Jackie, the biopic of the celebrated cellist.

"It's a story about compassion, about non-judgement. There are no goodies or baddies in the story, just proper people."

The same could be said of his next outing, Vigo, in which Frain stars as Jean Vigo, the French fimmaker who made the masterpieces L'Atalante and Zero De Conduite before going to an early grave. Having wanted to become an actor since childhood, Frain is a supporter of the homegrown industry.

"We're lucky that it's possible to make films here," he enthuses. "It's great that you can make stories about people in your own environment."

But he wouldn't hesitate to cross the Atlantic if the material was right.

"If someone says, 'Here's a brilliant script and millions to do it', you'd go wherever it's being shot."
