.....peacefully reading away Invited by old friend Chris to join him and his friend Stefan for dinner. Victor and Chris Listening to story.
Various reactions to Stefan and Chris's romantic tales........ ....and so on..... .....and so on......... ....and so on.
Stefan ranting on as waitress Connie listens in. Victor and Chris laughing at Connie's quip. Victor slips in a comment of his own. The boys.....
...enjoying their red meat. Incredulous again listening to Stefan's story. Stefan yammers on as the others listen. Victor orders coffee and offers to tell his story.
Victor begins to explain why he 'dropped out of sight'..... He talks about his addiction to prostitutes. Victor picking up a date for hire. Negotiating a price.
Waking up in his apartment to the sound of firecrackers in the hall on the 4th of July Facing the day. Gazing at the light of day, coming to an epiphany about his life. Victor finds himself searching for a plan -- at least for the day.
Collapsing in a fit of laughter after a few push-ups. He calls his friend Chris to ask him to hang out for Independance Day. Victor tries to explain to Chris his new-found sense of enthusiam for life. Waiting for the fireworks to begin, Chris clearing is not 'getting it.'
While watching the fireworks, Victor spots a woman. Ruth, sitting with her father, warily returns Victor's smile. Chris, dismayed at his friend's new lack of cynicism, bids him good bye. Victor carries on with his zest for life quest.
In the midst of running around the park, he spots the young woman again and introduces himself. After convincing her that he is harmless........ .....Ruth invites him back to her place for tea. Victor hears the story of Ruth's battle with cancer.
Gazing out at the view, their conversation continues. Ruth speaks beautifully of life, and of looking for reasons to carry on in the face of death. He finds himself drawn in. He takes her hand......
...and leads her back inside. And so begins....... ....a sweet...... ...seduction.
Ruth tells Victor 'before i was sick, all my boyfriends looked like you.' Victor wakes up alone in Ruth's bed. He finds Ruth in tears. After refusing to 'leave her alone'...........
.......Ruth invites Victor into her life. Victor faces one more crude comment from Stefan. Chris says goodbye as he and Stefan leave. Cynics to the end, Stefan and Chris question the truth of Victor's story of love and compassion.
